About Us

Mission

The School for ARTs in Learning (SAIL) is a Kindergarten through 8th grade public charter school providing multiple creative environments, opportunities, and experiences for all children through arts-infused academic programs.

Philosophy

SAIL works to address the needs of students with learning differences by providing creative learning environments. We have developed a specialized curriculum using the arts to help children learn in ways that match their learning styles. Our focus is on developing the whole child intellectually, emotionally, physically, and socially.

SAIL is a community of learners and educators who promote Safety, positive Attitude, Intelligent choices, and Leadership – SAIL to Success!
Ms. Alicia & Mr. ChristianSAIL has dedicated teachers like 4th/5th Grade teacher Ms. Alicia and 6th Grade teacher Mr. Christian.
Teachers

SAIL’s teachers and staff are not only experienced, knowledgeable and qualified, but they are also extremely dedicated to their students.

Our staff is well trained in behavior management systems that empower the individual as well as unleash their creativity. We ensure that every classroom is a safe place for children to take risks and that ample resources are devoted to this goal.

Individual attention is important at SAIL and the student-to-teacher ratio is no greater than 8:1.

Students

For the 2009-2010 school year, SAIL has 164 students in Kindergarten through 8th grade and 60 percent receive special education services. Ninety-two percent of the students are African-American, five percent are Hispanic/Latino, and two percent are Asian. About seventy-five percent of the children come from low-income families and they live in every ward of the District of Columbia.

Location

Since SAIL shares a home with WVSA ARTs connection, our umbrella organization serving DC children and youth with special needs for almost 30 years, we have access to a wealth of youth and family resources within our own building.

Having a downtown location (16th & L Street, NW), SAIL is convenient for parents  as well as volunteers who work nearby. It also enables ease of access to the cultural resources of Washington, DC.
