Educating young minds through the ARTs.

The First Grade's project for this year is "Author's Study." Every 5 weeks
the First Grade will learn about a new Author, and their works. Throughout
the process we will work on creative projects that will accompany our
learning about the Author and their books.

So far to date we have studied three Authors:

Bill Martin Jr. Project; we built our own Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Tree,
based on the book "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom"

Robert Munsch Project; we had a cookie celebration in support of the book
"Mmmmm Cookies!" Each student brought in their favorite cookie to share.

Currently we are working on our third Author Jan Brett. We are working on
two projects. The first is HATS! Based on the book "The Hat" and the second
one is building our own umbrellas, based on the story "The Umbrella."

In art studio, the 1st grade class created “mixed-up” animals in response to Eric Carle’s “The Mixed Up Chameleon”.  Brainstorming about animals with ideal characteristics, the 1st grade combined body parts from different animals and invented their own!  Students were encouraged then to design an environment for their creatures, keeping in mind the climate, survival needs of their animal, and using their awesome imaginations!

we are also working on first grade year books. Each month, each student, writes a reflective piece on what they were proud of learning in the month. The title of the project is called "Proud to be Me!" By the end of the school year each student will have a total of 10 pages in
their book. We will bind them, and each student will design their own cover.

LEAVES – 1st grade has been studying leaves, the colors, textures, and shapes.  They hung the leaves from the ceiling as if they are falling from the trees.

My name is Sarah Yetunde Tiamiyu. I was born in Edmonton, Alberta Canada.

My Daddy is Nigerian and my mother is Russian. I have a younger brother Elias, who is a sheriff in Toronto, Canada. I recently moved to the D.C. area after 5 years of working at an Inner City school in Toronto, Canada. I studied Elementary/Special Education at the University of Alberta for five years, before being recruited to move to Toronto. In 2005 I went back to
school at the University of Toronto and completed a Specialist in Mathematics. I enjoy traveling the world, and appreciate all the opportunities that this profession has allowed me. I love teaching and will probably be doing it for my entire life.

SAIL believes that the single most powerful tool to motivate students, enhance learning, and develop high-order thinking skills, especially for at-risk students (K-6), is by infusing the arts into the core curriculum.
