Educating young minds through the ARTs.

This advisory the second grade focused on social studies and learned about  citizenship.  Our project began by reading  parts of  the constitution and the bill of rights.  After we thought about school every day at SAIL and what rights we have here.  Some of the most popular were the right to swim, the right to do art and the right to read.

Next, second graders discussed the rights and responsibilities of citizenship.  Second graders learned new words associated with being a good citizen.  For each word; courage, responsibility, achievement, politeness and  caring, students created a picture dictionary showing actions they do each day ensuring they are responsible citizens.

Finally, we discussed how some people are remembered from being exceptionally responsible citizens by having a statue made in their memory.  We took a walking tour to look at statues near SAIL. Students each chose one person they wanted to leanr more about and our unit will cumulate after fall break, when each student presents their final project. Students are currently working hard researching a past citizen and writing a report. Then, each will come dressed as their past person and a statue they have made to honor their past person.  Look forward to seeing photos from the presentations.

SAIL believes that the single most powerful tool to motivate students, enhance learning, and develop high-order thinking skills, especially for at-risk students (K-6), is by infusing the arts into the core curriculum.
