Students participating in the Kung Fu for Concentration afterschool club.
Every student is paired with a Reading Buddy, a caring adult who volunteers half an hour a week reading with the student. This is a great way to not only help improve reading, but also to facilitate a great bonding experience. Several students also have Math Buddies to help students improve their math skills.
SAIL has clubs every other Wednesday afternoon that include Drama, Music, Kung Fu for Concentration, Sports, Leadership, Yoga and Socialites. Also, SAIL has a Cub Scout den.
SAIL has partnerships with the West End Library, the Corcoran School of Art, and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts that supplement SAIL’s programs. SAIL students hold performances at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Hall of Flags.
Knitting Club
This year SAIL's art teacher Ms. Amanda and 5th/6th grade teacher assistant Ms. Marleah have started a knitting club for students in 5th through 8th grade. About 13 students meet each Thursday after school for an hour in the art room, where they share in progress projects, help one another with tricky knitting situations, and discuss up coming projects and fundraisers. The Knitting Club focuses on community service and building positive relationships between peers as well as recognizing the importance of reaching out to those less fortunate.
Club members are currently working on knitting 8" x 8" squares for Knit-A-Square. All squares will be donated to AIDS orphans in Africa and sewn into blankets once they arrive on site.
At the current moment materials for the knitting club come from various individuals. The club is very grateful for this generosity and could not have had this much success with out those individuals.
We are always accepting donations for yarn and needles and will make use of everything. If you would like to make a donation, you can drop it off at the front desk in the school lobby or call (202) 296-9100.
